Who We Are

We are the newest addition to the brewing culture in Victoria — the Beer Capital of Canada. Victoria’s newest brewpub offers English-Style session Ales from our 10-hectoliter brewhouse. In our pub we serve home-cooked meals — made from scratch. Like a real English pub, service is at the bar.

Where We Are

We are located in the Rock Bay area at 350B Bay Street — just before you go across the Bay Street Bridge into Vic West. We have plenty of parking and if you need to leave your car overnight and take a cab home — your car can stay for free and will not be towed away!

Principals

Don, Bonnie and Ron Bradley are the principals of the Moon Under Water Brewpub. We were the founders of Bowen Island Brewing back in 1994 and operated it until we sold in 1998. With our vast experience in the brewing we will be offering four mainstay ales followed up with seasonal ales and as many other ales as we can produce to satisfy people looking for something new and tasty all year round. As we are new to the pub side, we have tried to incorporate as many of the things we wanted in our ideal pub and left out all the things we do not like.

Now remember, this is our ideal English-style, bar-service pub, but we think you will like the atmosphere we have created. Our pub is quiet; our beers are English-Style ales that are lower in alcohol but full of flavour; and all our food is made in-house.

We named our brewpub “The Moon Under Water” — from a 1946 essay written by George Orwell. In this essay he describes his ideal pub.
He states —

My favourite public-house, the Moon Under Water, is only two minutes from a bus stop, but it is on a side-street, and drunks and rowdies never seem to find their way there, even on Saturday nights. Its clientele, though fairly large, consists mostly of “regulars” who occupy the same chair every evening and go there for conversation as much as for the beer.

If you are asked why you favour a particular public-house, it would seem natural to put the beer first, but the thing that most appeals to me about the Moon Under Water is what people call its “atmosphere”.

We have tried to create a little oasis in the middle of the Rock Bay Industrial area that has a comfortable and inviting atmosphere. A place for real social networking and to enjoy conversation beside the fireplace. There are no TV’s in the main part of the pub but we are planning to have a separate television room for those who want to watch an important game.

We also have the best service in town — because you serve yourself!
